Wireless Connectivity for Broadcasting

Ever since Ofcom “opened the airwaves” with the introduction of Shared Access Licences for spectrum usage in the UK, Neutral Wireless has been at the forefront of facilitating live-to-air sports and news broadcasts over our Private 5G networks. Our multi–award-winning and Emmy®-nominated connectivity solutions have proven themselves in a range of significant high-profile deployments in recent years.

The New Way to do Wireless

Rapidly Deployable Wireless IP Video Transport

Our Non-Public (Private) 5G networks are optimised for rapid deployment, ultra-low latencies, and ease of integration. We leverage the inherent scalability and IP-based nature of the latest 5G technologies to bring you a robust, high-capacity means of transporting video (or any other) data.

Private 5G, no need for a PHD

Built for Broadcast

Neutral Wireless connectivity solutions have been purpose-built to solve the problems of the broadcast market. Optimised based on feedback from some of the largest broadcasters in Europe, our Private 5G networks are…

  • Robust, lightweight, and small form-factor. Each radio under 15kg, each baseband unit under 5kg.
  • Energy efficient. With a single-cell solution burning less than 200W, our networks can run for a full working day off battery power.
  • Congestion free. Dedicated spectrum means that cellular network saturation in the presence of large crowds is a thing of the past.
  • Designed for rapid rig and de-rig. Our networks are deployable out of the box in less than 30 minutes, or closer to 10 with practice.
  • Accessible to anyone. Our nibOS user interface handles all the heavy-lifting of configuration, and delivers real-time, per-device monitoring statistics.
We Work with Your Workflow

Encoder Agnostic Connectivity

We strongly believe that from your perspective, any connectivity should “just work”. We do not practice any vendor lock-in for end user devices.

Instead, we actively engage with companies such as Dejero, Haivision, LiveU, TVU, Teradek, and Vislink / Mobile Viewpoint (among others) to ensure compatibility of encoders and mobile video transmitters on our networks.

Our solutions can carry any form of IP video traffic, including transport protocols such as UDP, SRT, and NDI|Hx.

Swing both ways

Enable New Workflows with Bi-directional IP

As an inherently IP-switched wireless technology, our 5G networks can complement or replace existing wireless camera and microphone solutions, all managed under a single spectrum license.

Our bi-directional solutions can facilitate remote production features such as camera control, wireless return video, tally, talkback, and others.

Connectivity you can trust

Why Broadcast with Neutral Wireless?

We are world-leaders in Private 5G for broadcasting, having facilitated HD video broadcasts across four continents, and with excess of one billion viewers having watched live-to-air footage enabled by our networks. We have experience in deploying for live sports (on land and at sea), live events and festivals, national election coverage, and parades & cultural events.

Nobody does it like us

High-Performance Hardware

Neutral Wireless Private 5G solutions are built on high-performance software-defined radios, based on the AMD RFSoC chipset. Our radios have greater resolution and receive sensitivity than others on the market, leading to higher throughput, greater coverage, and a more robust signal.

What’s more, our team literally wrote the book on the RFSoC chipset, giving us the expertise to optimise our solutions for best performance.

Optimised for your use case

Ultra-Configurable Connectivity

Whereas public cellular networks (and many other private network suppliers) dedicate roughly ~75% of their bandwidth to downlink connectivity, we realise that this is a waste of resources for many of our broadcast customers.

Instead, we give you full-featured control over your network configuration. Allowing you to optimise your network for uplink-heavy and low-latency applications. Other features include…

  • Quality of service levels. Keep your main camera feeds on higher-priority bearers.
  • Up to 4×4 DL MIMO, allowing real-world downlink speeds of up to 1200 Mbps
  • Up to 2×2 UL MIMO, allowing real-world uplink speeds of up to 600 Mbps.
  • Glass-to-glass latencies of ~80ms (encoder dependant).
Case Studies

World Leaders in Private 5G for Broadcast

Neutral Wireless have been facilitating live-to-air broadcasts over our networks since 2021, when we first deployed a network for the Silverstone MotoGP. Since then, we have provided connectivity for several broadcast partners including the BBC, BT Sport, FranceTV, RAI, RTÉ, and the Olympic Broadcasting Services. Each deployment informs the next generation of our product development, assuring that we remain the gold standard for wireless broadcast connectivity.

The (Then) world’s largest pop-up 5G Network

King Charles III’s Coronation

In 2023, Neutral Wireless worked with BBC R&D to deploy what was the worlds largest temporary pop-up 5G network for broadcasting purposes. Where broadcasters using public cellular connectivity struggled for kilobits due to the crowds, our clients were able to push stable HD footage over our networks for the duration of the event.

  • We provided over 1 Gbps across approximately 60 devices, from 20 of the world’s leading broadcasters.
  • Local broadcasters included the BBC, ITN and Sky, with international broadcasters including ABC, ARD, CBC, CBS, CNN, RTL and TV2. Several of these broadcasters requested SIM cards from us on the day, which we were happy to provide.
  • With zero packet loss handover between cells, directors and camera operators were also granted greater freedom of movement — allowing them to grab the best possible shots of the royal family
